Overview
Virginia state law requires each locality to create a planning commission to promote development of the locality and its environs. The planning commission is primarily an advisory body appointed by the
City Council.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Planning Commission is made up of five members appointed for terms of four years. The primary purpose of this board is to assist the governing body in improving public health, safety, convenience, and welfare of its citizenry by properly planning for the future development of the community. More specifically, the City Planning Commission is responsible for the Comprehensive Plan of the City including:
- Periodically updating the Plan,
- Administering the subdivision and zoning ordinances,
- Evaluating and recommending requests for rezoning to the governing body
- Granting subdivision and site plan requests
- Generally assisting City Council and the City Administration with a variety of community issues
The Planning Commission receives no direct funding from City Council.
