Volunteer Opportunities
The City of Norton Police Department has several volunteer opportunities available to the public /citizens who wish to volunteer their time to help their communities. The Auxiliary Police Officer Program, Citizens Academy, Citizen Ride-Along Program and the Explorer Post are the volunteer opportunities currently available. 

Auxiliary Police Officer Program – The City of Norton Police Department maintains a group of volunteers referred to as Auxiliary Officers. Auxiliary Officers provide assistance to the City of Norton Police Department in the support delivery of public safety and service to the citizens of the City of Norton. The Auxiliary Officer assists in carrying out the functions of the City of Norton Police Department in the proper enforcement of all laws and the protection of life and property. Each member of the Auxiliary Police Officer’s Program shall be governed by the policy and procedure of the City of Norton Police Department.

Citizens Academy – The purpose of the Citizens Academy is to provide citizens with a better understanding of the Police Department, the officers, and their day-to-day responsibilities.

The City of Norton Citizens Police Academy is a ten-week course dealing with all of the aspects and duties of an officer. The course is taught by the City of Norton Police Department Officers and volunteers. Participants will be able to gain knowledge of the many roles and responsibilities of the officers, including traffic enforcement, investigation processes, crime prevention, court and prosecution, k-9 handling, and more.

Citizen Ride-Along Program – The Ride-Along Program allows citizens to voluntarily accompany officers and to observe law-enforcement activities to better understand the problems of policing. The observer may request to ride in any area at any time or with a particular officer. If convenient to the department and conditions permit, permission may be granted. The department’s community-oriented policing goals include a commitment to work with the community to solve neighborhood problems and to operate an open, accessible, accountable agency. The Ride-Along program is consistent with these goals. 

Explorer Post - The Norton Police Department Explorer Post #444 is a non-profit organization created by the Boy Scouts of America for youth between the ages of 14 and 21 and still enrolled in school or college.

The purpose of this organization is to give the youth an opportunity to better understand the police officer’s functions in law enforcement and to broaden the youth’s knowledge of basic procedures. The Norton Post was organized in 1986. The Post meets once a week for classroom training. Explorers assist on-duty officers at school functions and city events. They also compete against other posts in law enforcement competitions.
