Norton City Council on Feb. 20, 2018 approved a resolution supporting the city's participation in a regional solar initiative. The resolution supported and approved the city initiating the SolSmart application process with technical assistance from the National Association of Counties and Appalachian Voices. SolSmart is a program of the Department of Energy that provides recognition and no-cost technical assistance to help local governments reduce barriers to solar energy growth. Below is a statement regarding the city's goals for its role in the SolSmart program:
Our goals include encouraging stakeholders to incorporate solar Photo Voltaic (PV) systems into their development processes, as well as streamlining the permit process and zoning requirements to help make the proposed use and installation of solar PV systems less burdensome for homeowners, developers, and those interested in participating in alternative energy resource growth and development.
